Our Approach to Elbow & Wrist Pain
Our approach to elbow and wrist pain is that we listen to help narrow down the source of your injury. We look at the body as a whole and investigate all possible reasons for your pain. Your neck can be one of those potential areas that refers pain and weakness to your arm. Our clinic employs a methodology that can screen the spine to ensure that your elbow and wrist pain isn't just coming from a muscle strain or a stiff joint.
What to Expect at Your First Visit
At Break Free, we focus on you first. We listen to your story and review your history to see if there are any patterns or underlying themes that can help lead to an answer to your pain. We then guide you through movement and observe trends, patterns, and strength deficits to help identify the key source of your problem. After our movement analysis and special tests, we will provide you with an idea of what you are dealing with, how long it will take, and a movement to test that theory. We will also use modalities only if needed, which may include acupuncture, dry needling, and manual therapy.
In the case of an elbow and wrist injury, we will always check your spine to see if some of your wrist pain is referred from the nerves of your neck. To be thorough and ensure there aren't any other factors muddying the picture, we have a way to confirm whether or not your neck is part of your wrist and elbow injury.
Does Physiotherapy Help Elbow and Wrist Pain?
Yes! Elbow and wrist pain is well within the wheelhouse of physiotherapists. Whether it's muscles, ligaments, or joints, physiotherapists are trained to identify what could be causing your pain through your history, a range of motion assessment, and special tests.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does tennis elbow take to heal?
It depends on how long the injury has been around. We also factor in whether your cervical spine is contributing — if your neck is involved and responds well to the right movements, that part of your prognosis can improve faster. But that doesn't rule out an underlying tendon problem too, which usually takes longer, since tendon-strengthening exercises need time to actually take effect.
Do I need to stop the activity that's causing it?
It depends on how much it hurts and where your pain is located. There are ways to stay active, like using a brace, but the best way to speed up healing is often still rest. Your physiotherapist can suggest active rest — other activities that support your healing rather than detract from it.
Can physiotherapy help carpal tunnel, or do I need surgery?
Physiotherapy can be the first line of defence before surgery is considered. Wrist mobilizations, stretching, and workstation modifications can all help. And don't forget the neck — sometimes something known as double crush syndrome can occur, where the nerve is compressed at two different sites along its path. That's why it's important to see a physiotherapist who is trained to look at the whole picture.
Why does my elbow hurt but nothing showed up on an X-ray?
X-rays show bone, while ultrasound shows soft tissue like muscle and tendon. Imaging on its own won't diagnose your injury — findings on a scan don't always correlate with what you're actually feeling.
